Distribution transformers are normally installed at service drop locations, where wires run from a utility pole or underground power lines to a customer’s premises. They are often used to supply power to facilities outside settlements, such as isolated houses, commercial or industrial buildings, farm yards, or pumping stations at voltages below 30 kV.

The number of customers served by a single distribution transformer varies depending on the load density of an area. In urban areas, several homes may be served by a single transformer. Rural distribution may require one transformer per customer, depending on the mains voltage. Large commercial or industrial complexes may use multiple distribution transformers.

Three-phase transformers are available for indoor or outdoor use (installation to be specified).
